The U.S. Department of Education has recognized four schools in South Dakota for improvements in academics.  The schools in South Dakota to receive recognition and are known as South Dakota's Blue Ribbon Schools are Howard Elementary School in Howard, Medary Elementary School in Brookings, Timber Lake High School in Timber Lake and O'Gorman High School in Sioux Falls.

287 public and 50 private schools across the country have been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and four are from South Dakota.  This national achievement honor acknowledges schools that have students reaching exceptionally high learning standards and are continuing to make noticeable improvements.

South Dakota's public schools that were recognized for this national achievement honor were nominated by the chief school officer in South Dakota.  Private schools  were nominated by the Council for American Private Education.
