A shift of 30 miles as the crow flies will bring more jobs to South Dakota. SmithCo Manufacturing, which makes side dump trailers, announced Monday that it will be relocating its corporate headquarters from Le Mars, Iowa to Elk Point. The move will create six jobs in Elk Point, with the potential of additional new jobs in the next two to three years.

The South Dakota Governor’s Office of Economic Development champions the move including Governor Dennis Daugaard himself. “SmithCo Manufacturing is at the leading edge of trailer technology. I am confident the transition to Elk Point will be a positive move for the company and will result in future economic growth for the community, state and SmithCo.”

The news is not all bad for Le Mars as outlined by the President of SmithCo Greg Smith. A lot of the manufacturing will continue in Iowa, but moving the corporate office to South Dakota will enhance their model. “Our new corporate headquarters will have a dual purpose, also serving as a new sales outpost for SmithCo in South Dakota. This is something our customers wanted and we’re responding to them.”

The company is wrapping up the build out of their new space. The South Dakota Governor’s Office of Economic Development is providing low interest loan assistance for the build out costs of the new corporate headquarter space.
