PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — The deputy fire chief in South Dakota's capital city has accepted an offer to be Pierre's new fire chief.

KCCR radio reports that Ian Paul's hiring is contingent on City Commission approval. Once that happens, Paul will succeed Bill Alexander, who retired late last year.

Paul currently holds the department's highest-ranking volunteer position. As the fire chief, he will be working full time.

Paul has been a Pierre firefighter for 14 years and an officer for 12 years. He was one of nearly 30 candidates for the top job.
