Companies Look to Home-grow US IT Workforce

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - A small but growing number of public-private endeavors are trying to spark an IT reshoring trend by developing the nation's next generation of tech experts.

In South Dakota, Eagle Creek Software Services turned to the University of South Dakota to help home-grow tech talent through a customized four-course certificate.

And Brooklyn's P-Tech, a collaboration among IBM, the New York Public Schools and City University of New York, earned a mention in President Obama's State of the Union Address. Six-year students graduate job-ready with an associate's degree.

PlanetMagpie's Doreyne Douglas says she'd like to see the on-shoring instead of off-shoring concept begin spreading throughout information technology as it is in manufacturing.

She says the cost of hiring programmers in India far exceeds the promised price with language, cultural and time-zone issues.
