Coldest Place on Earth

Monday morning Tammy and I were talking about the coldest town in South Dakota.  We came up with Aberdeen.

I remember as a kid, going to horse shows at the Brown County Fairgrounds. And yes, I remember at times, it was cold!  A lot colder than our hometown of Kennebec, SD.

Tammy grew up in the Hecla, SD area and went on to school at NSU in Aberdeen.  She agreed, Aberdeen is the coldest place in South Dakota.

Now, that might not be anything official, for all we know Camp Crook could be a colder place.  But then I caught this news story this morning.  The headline said ‘The Coldest Place on Earth!’  Yep, I was captivated!  According to RTT News:

Which is the coldest place on Earth? It is a high ridge in Antarctica on the East Antarctic Plateau where temperatures in several hollows can dip below minus 133.6 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 92 degrees Celsius) on a clear winter night.

A team of researchers reported the findings on Monday at the American Geophysical Union meeting in San Francisco.

Scientists made the discovery while analyzing the most detailed global surface temperature maps to date, developed with data from remote sensing satellites including the new Landsat 8, a joint project of NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

So, am I wrong on Aberdeen?  My son goes to Northern State University.  Yesterday we had to put a new battery in his car.  He might agree.  Aberdeen, Cold!  After reading this, not so much!
