Charles Mix Signs Sparking Decades-old Debate

WAGNER, S.D. (AP) — Highway signs recognizing the Yankton Sioux Tribe's presence in Charles Mix County are stirring up memories of a two-decade debate between the county and tribe over reservation boundaries and jurisdiction.

The South Dakota Department of Transportation earlier this year installed signs in southern Charles Mix County reading "Entering Yankton Sioux Nation."

Charles Mix County deputy state s attorney Scott Podhradsky tells the Yankton Press & Dakotan (http://bit.ly/15lQCIa ) that county officials aren t opposed to signs honoring the tribe, but state officials never talked to the county commission or area city councils before putting them up.

The state and Charles Mix County have argued through lengthy legal battles that the reservation was eliminated in the late 1800s. A federal judge ruled that the reservation covers more than 30,000 acres.
