The leader of an effort to make marijuana a legal medical drug in South Dakota says the best way likely would be an initiated measure to put the question on to the 2016 general election ballot.

Emmett Reistroffer says the fact that 2016 is a presidential election year will mean a higher voter turnout and a better chance of success.

However, Reistroffer will be moving to Colorado to join that state's new marijuana industry. Still, he hopes to give back to South Dakota.

He told the Argus Leader "It does make me sick to leave. I've got so much skin in the game. But I'm really comfortable the movement is in the right hands."
