No charges will be brought against Benny Birchfield after he shot and killed his granddaughter's ex-boyfriend on Dec. 17.

The widower of Grand Ole Opry star Jean Shepard was trying to protect his granddaughter when he shot and killed a man on Saturday (Dec. 17), Nashville's Tennessean reports.

During a fatal stabbing, Benny Birchfield allegedly shot Travis Sanders, his granddaughter Iciey Sloan-Hawkins' ex, to try to protect her.

Benny Birchfield, the widower of country artist Jean Shepard, was injured during a fatal stabbing that took place outside of Nashville on Saturday (Dec. 17).

Jean Shepard passed away on Sunday (Sept. 25) at the age of 82. She will be honored this week with a funeral and visitation, which will be open for fans to attend and mourn.

The details of Jean Shepard's visitation and burial have been released.
