The Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation department announced the closure dates of the outdoor swimming facilities for the 2017 season.

The outdoor aquatic centers will close on the following dates:

  • Friday, August 11 - Frank Olson Pool
  • Sunday, August 13 - Laurel Oak Family Aquatic Center
  • Friday, August 18 - Kuehn Pool
  • Sunday, August 20 - Drake Springs Family Aquatic Center, McKennan Wading Pool
  • Sunday, September 3 - Terrace Park Family Aquatic Center

There will also be two Swimming Gone to the Dogs that will take place Tuesday, August 15, 2017 from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM at Laurel Oak Family Aquatic Center and on Wednesday, September 6, 2017 from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM at Terrace Park Family Aquatic Center.

The reason pools are closing seemingly early is because a large portion of the staff will be going back to college or starting sports.

“Many of the summer lifeguard staff will end their employment to head back to college or begin fall sports. The pool closing schedule allows the safe management of pools with the number of available staff. This year’s closing dates are consistent with our schedules from past years,” says Recreation Program Coordinator Jean Pearson.

“Every year our goal is to keep one or two pools open until the Sunday prior to Labor Day.”
