PARKER, S.D. (AP) — The lawyer for opponents of a large egg-laying facility planned near Parker is challenging whether a Turner County board that approved the project improperly met behind closed doors.

The Argus Leader reports that Clay County State's Attorney Teddi Gertsma is handling the complaint from attorney Mike Schaffer.

Schaffer maintains that the Turner County Board of Adjustment improperly entered into an executive session that was closed to the public Feb. 9 to discuss terms of the permit for Sonstegard Foods' chicken farm.

Turner County State's Attorney Katelynn Hoffman represents the board. She declined comment, aside from confirming she'd forwarded the complaint to Gertsma for an independent evaluation.

If an open meetings violation is confirmed it will not have any effect on Turner County's decision to permit the 500,000-bird operation.
