I went to public school and I only know a handful of people who went to a private school growing up. I do know, however, that private schools charge a tuition fee like a college. I didn't realize, though, just how expensive that can be.

How Much Does Private School Cost in Minnesota?

When looking through a list of the tuition that private schools charge across Minnesota in 2024, half of them were under $10,000 per year.

On average, according to Private School Review, paying for private school in Minnesota is going to cost $14,542 per year. That's double the average cost of going to a public college in Minnesota which is $7,880 per year (if you're a Minnesota resident).

So yes, private grade schools are very expensive. But that $14,542 is nothing compared to the cost of the most expensive high school in our state.

Minnesota's Most Expensive High School

The tuition at the most expensive high school (which is also the most expensive private school in Minnesota) is more than twice the average cost of private school. That's crazy!

That school is Shattuck-St. Mary's in Faribault.

Shattuck-St. Mary's is a beautiful school that's a boarding school and also a day school. It first opened back in 1858 and they welcome students from all over the world.

The cheapest tuition is their domestic day school option. Just for tuition for the 2024-25 school year, it costs $42,000 to attend. And that doesn't include the extra estimated $4,300-$5,100 of required fees and materials.

In total, the lowest estimated cost to attend Shattuck-St. Mary's is $46,300. My bank account hurts just thinking about that.
