What Is the Quintessential South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota Song?
If you had to pick one song that best represented your home state what would it be?
While you're thinking about that, consider the playlist that paid tribute to all 50 states we heard this week at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
During the celebratory roll call of state delegations, the in-house emcee, DJ Cassidy, spun 50 tunes that supposedly best represented each of the 50 states.
Some made perfect sense as they acknowledged famous hometown artists like:
- Arizona: Stevie Nicks - 'Edge of Seventeen'
- California: Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg - 'The Next Episode'
- Florida: Tom Petty - 'I Won't Back Down'
- Hawaii: Bruno Mars - '24K Magic'
- Indiana: Michael Jackson - 'Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough'
- New Jersey: Bruce Springsteen - 'Born in the U.S.A.'
- Oklahoma: Garth Brooks - 'Ain't Goin' Down ('til the Sun Comes Up)'
- Tennessee: Dolly Parton - '9 to 5'
Others were logical choices for their tie-in with a particular state:
- Alabama: 'Sweet Home Alabama' (Lynyrd Skynyrd)
- Idaho: 'Private Idaho' (The B-52's)
- Kansas: 'Carry On Wayward Son' (Kansas)
But what about the song picked for Minnesota, South Dakota, and Iowa?
For the North Star State it was a no-brainer.
'Kiss', the 1986 smash hit from Minneapolis native, the late Prince and his band, The Revolution.
The tracks picked for South Dakota and Iowa were head scratchers.
For the Mount Rushmore State, the pick was 'What I Like About You' from The Romantics.
Looking for a connection? There isn't one with this band from Detroit.
The pick for Iowa wasn't any better - 'Celebration' from Kool & The Gang.
The band hails from Jersey City, New Jersey, more than 1,100 miles from Des Moines, the capital of the Hawkeye State.
Again, people on social media didn't hold back their feelings about the selection:
