There’s Been a Massive Nationwide Dog Food Recall
A popular prescription dog food is being recalled due to potential toxicity concerns.
The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) says Nestlé Purina PetCare has voluntarily recalled two sizes of its Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental (PPVD EL) dry dog food.
The impacted items were sold nationwide through veterinary clinics, Purina Vet Direct, Purina for Professionals, and other retailers that can validate a prescription. The eight-pound bags have a UPC of 38100 1919 and 20-pound bags have the UPC 38100 19192.
According to the FDA, the recalled food could contain elevated levels of vitamin D, which can cause symptoms like 'vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, and excessive drooling [due] to renal (kidney) dysfunction.'
Purina says it issued the recall after receiving reports of two separate cases in which dogs consuming the product developed signs of vitamin D toxicity. Fortunately, the agency says that both animals recovered once the dog food was removed from their diet.
No other Purina products are affected by the recall.
Anyone who purchased the recalled items should stop using them immediately and dispose of them properly.
