To quote Beauty and The Beast, it's a 'tale as old as time'.

They're known as the 'Seven Deadly Sins' - lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy, and pride - and they go all the way back to Biblical times.

Well, the folks at WalletHub have decided to take a modern look at our main character flaws as humans to determine which are the most sinful cities in America.

To arrive at each city's 'sin ranking', they looked at 47 key indicators like drinking, crime, and gambling numbers, and broke those down into seven key dimensions:

  • Anger and Hatred (Violent Crime)
  • Jealousy (Thefts)
  • Excesses and Vices (Obesity, Drinking, Smoking)
  • Greed (Gambling)
  • Lust (Adult Entertainment Establishments per Capita)
  • Vanity (Tanning Salons per Capita)
  • Laziness (Average Daily Time Spent Watching TV)

In the Tri-State area, only one city is among the top 50 most sinful in the nation.

Minneapolis checks in at number 50, after pulling in rankings of number 23 in both greed and vanity.

South Dakota's most sinful city is just nine spots down from Minneapolis.

Rapid City is 59th overall with a top ten ranking (#7) in lust and a top 25 showing (#22) in anger and hatred.

The only other Tri-State city in the top 100 is St. Paul (#91), which has the fifth-highest number of adult entertainment establishments in the U.S.

South Dakota and Iowa's biggest cities are in the bottom half of the sinful list.

Sioux Falls is 112th with a number 30 ranking in greed.

Des Moines is 128rth with a number 35 showing in excesses and vices.
