Can Sioux Falls Start Naming Snow Plows?
Although we're still a few weeks out from the official start of winter we've already seen some snow and ice on the streets of Sioux Falls. The city snow plows are being readied and piles of salt and sand are waiting to be spread on the roads.
For 13 years, the city of Sioux Falls has had a 'Paint the Plow' contest in which school students submit a design in hopes of getting their creation on the blade of a mighty plow. It gives you a smile when the roads are filling up with snow - a time when we really need a smile.
Minnesota has a different way to make you chuckle when the plows are out. Our snowy friends to the north crowdsourced a 'Name the Plow' contest and it's just as silly as you'd expect.
Last year, the people of Minnesota overwhelmingly voted Plowy McPlowFace should be the name on one of their snow plows. This year, McPlowFace has 8 new friends - and you've got to hand it to the Minnesotans. Eight new plows will bear the names:
- Betty Whiteout
- Ctrl, Salt, Delete
- The Big Leplowski
- Plowasaurus Rex
- Scoop Dogg
- Blizzard of Oz
- No More Mr. Ice Guy
- Edward Blizzardhands
Well done, Minnesota! It's good to have a sense of humor when your lips are frozen and you can't feel your toes.
Perhaps the South Dakota Department of Transportation would like to follow suit? What would your idea be?
