South Dakota residents should prepare for deteriorating air quality conditions as heavy wildfire smoke from Canada is forecast to move into the state.

The smoke will arrive behind a cold front, bringing potentially hazardous air quality levels across the region on Wednesday and Thursday.

Greatest Impact Expected in Eastern South Dakota

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, the most concentrated smoke is currently forecast to affect eastern South Dakota this afternoon and evening.

Based on upstream observations and atmospheric modeling, air quality could drop to Unhealthy levels at times, particularly posing risks for sensitive individuals, including children, elderly residents, and those with respiratory conditions like asthma or COPD.

Visibility and Duration Concerns

Along with air quality impacts, some visibility reductions are expected as the dense smoke moves through the area.

Conditions are forecast to slowly improve from the north late tonight as winds shift and help clear the smoke.

However, some areas may continue to experience lingering smoke effects into Thursday morning.

Health Precautions Recommended

Those sensitive to poor air quality should take immediate precautions, including limiting outdoor activities, keeping windows closed, and using air conditioning when possible.

Consider postponing outdoor exercise until conditions improve.
