UPDATE 3/8/23 7:30 AM

The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls has issued a Winter Weather Advisory For the Sioux Empire, including Sioux Falls, and parts of western Minnesota and northwest Iowa, in effect from 6:00 AM Thursday until midnight Thursday.

Snow is expected to start Wednesday night (3/8), pick up Thursday morning and continue all day. 3 to 5 inches of snow is expected in Sioux Falls Thursday. 


 

Some places in Minnesota, Iowa, and South Dakota could be in the bullseye for another 12 inches of snow or more. Yuck!

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, there is a winter storm system that could bring some heavy snow to portions of eastern South Dakota and western Minnesota Wednesday into Thursday.

While there is still uncertainty with this system most areas have a moderate chance of seeing at least 6 inches of snow with some areas having the possibility of getting over 12 inches of new snow.

There is a WINTER STORM WATCH in effect from Thursday morning through Thursday night.

The counties in Minnesota and Iowa that are under the WINTER STORM WATCH include:

  • Lyon
  • Osceola
  • Dickinson
  • Sioux
  • O`Brien
  • Clay
  • Cherokee
  • Buena Vista
  • Lincoln
  • Murray
  • Cottonwood
  • Nobles
  • Jackson
  • Pipestone
  • Rock

Travel could be very difficult. Patchy blowing snow could further reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning and evening commutes on Thursday, and the morning commute again on Friday.
