The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for much of southeast South Dakota. The Watch is in effect until 6:00 AM Monday (June 17, 2024).
Sioux Falls, Brookings, Mitchell, Huron, Yankton, and Vermillion are included in the Watch area.
A Watch means that conditions are right for the development of severe thunderstorms. Those storms may include very strong winds, large hail, heavy rain, and the possibility of tornados.

The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a
* Severe Thunderstorm Watch for portions of
Southwest into Central and Northeast Nebraska
* Effective this Sunday night and Monday morning from 825 PM
until 200 AM CDT.
* Primary threats include...
Scattered large hail likely with isolated very large hail events
to 3 inches in diameter possible
Isolated damaging wind gusts to 70 mph possible
SUMMARY...Isolated to possibly widely scattered thunderstorms are
forecast to develop this evening into tonight along a frontal zone
extending from southwest Nebraska northeastward into northeast
Nebraska. The environment will support large to very large hail (1
to 3 inches in diameter) with any thunderstorm that is sustained and
intense. Isolated severe gusts (60-70 mph) may also accompany the
stronger thunderstorm cores.
The severe thunderstorm watch area is approximately along and 45
statute miles north and south of a line from 25 miles west northwest
of Mccook NE to 30 miles northeast of Norfolk NE. For a complete

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
REMEMBER...A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are
favorable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area.
Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening
weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible
warnings. Severe thunderstorms can and occasionally do produce
tornadoes
