Flandreau Marijuana Plan Could Put Issue before Legislature

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — Lawmakers on a state-tribal relations committee say the Flandreau Santee Sioux's plans to sell marijuana in a lounge on tribal land will likely thrust the issue before legislators in the upcoming session.

The committee met Monday and discussed the tribe's marijuana operation, which is scheduled to open New Year's Eve.

Republican Sen. Craig Tieszen says the situation is a "minefield" that could have a "significant impact" on tribal relations.

Attorney General Marty Jackley has said any changes in tribal laws won't affect any non-Indians or any non-tribal lands

Democratic Sen. Troy Heinert says there will be legislative changes or "darn sure some conversations" about the tribe's endeavor into marijuana.

Ryan Kills A Hundred of the Santee Sioux's executive committee says the tribe wants to work with the state and authorities.
