YANKTON, S.D. (AP) — The city of Yankton plans to study the potential for developing retail stores, hotels and convention space in the city.

The $18,000 retail market study is being paid for by Yankton Area Progressive Growth, which is funded by membership dues and capital campaigns. The $8,500 hotel/convention space study will be paid for through lodging taxes.

The Daily Press & Dakotan reports that the City Commission signed off on both studies Monday.

City Manager Amy Nelson says Yankton commissioned a study last year that determined local residents are going outside of the city to shop for clothing and general merchandise and to frequent family restaurants. She says national store chains have indicated more study is needed.

Results of the retail market study will be taken to trade shows.
