Yankton Man Sentenced for Assaulting Girlfriend
YANKTON, S.D. (AP) — A Yankton man accused of trying to kill his girlfriend has been sentenced to 13 ½ years in the State Penitentiary.
Curtis Wilson initially faced attempted murder and kidnapping charges but pleaded guilty in June to lesser counts of aggravated assault. The Daily Press & Dakotan reports he was sentenced Monday.
Authorities say Wilson pointed a rifle at his girlfriend in April 2013 and pulled the trigger, but the gun had no bullets. Wilson then allegedly fired a bullet into a neighbor's home when the woman fled there for safety. The neighbor was treated for minor injuries from flying debris.
Wilson blamed his actions on a combination of alcohol and antipsychotic medication.
He will have to serve at least 60 percent of his sentence before being eligible for parole.
