YANKTON, S.D. (AP) — Yankton County residents for the second time in two years are trying to refer to voters a decision by county leaders to increase taxes for road and bridge upkeep.

Opponents of a County Commission decision in July to increase property and wheel taxes submitted challenging petitions on Monday. County Auditor Patty Hojem tells the Daily Press & Dakotan that the signatures are being verified.

If there are enough valid signatures, the matter will be put on the November general election ballot for voters to decide.

County residents in September 2015 resoundingly defeated a larger proposed property tax increase to fund road and bridge repairs, with 70 percent of voters in opposition.

County Commissioner Todd Woods says no one wants to raise taxes, but requests for alternatives generated few ideas.
