SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Workplace fatalities in South Dakota last year totaled 31, unchanged from the previous year.

The federal Bureau of Labor Statistics says preliminary data show that more than half of the fatal work injuries in 2012 resulted from incidents involving transportation.

Of the 17 transportation deaths, roadway incidents involving motorized land vehicles was the most frequent type of workplace fatality with 10 deaths. Other major event categories each reported five or fewer deaths.

Fatal occupational injuries in the state have ranged from a high of 46 in 1999 to a low of 22 in 2007.
