Work Environment Questioned at State Development Center
REDFIELD, S.D. (AP) — Some former employees at the South Dakota Developmental Center in Redfield say the facility has a hostile administration and a dangerous work environment.
Former employee Paul Register collected 84 employee signatures on a petition that was submitted to the state Department of Human Services late last year. Register tells the American News that problems still aren't being addressed.
Center Director Jan Banghart says focus groups have been formed to work on worker retention, recruitment and better support for staff. The center has more than 40 open full-time positions.
The state-funded facility supports people with developmental disabilities. About 140 people live at the center and get round-the-clock care. Banghart says the work isn't for everyone.
Register says without proper staffing, the possibility of serious injuries increases.
