Woman Loses Money When Scammer Claims to Be Police Officer

BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) — A South Dakota woman is out of more than $300 after a con artist claiming to be a police officer demanded that she wired him money.

Brookings Police Lt. Derrick Powers says the bogus officer threatened to arrest the woman if she didn't pay some overdraft fees. Powers says the scammer apparently knew the woman's location, named a nearby street and told the woman officers were waiting to arrest her if she didn't comply.

Powers says the woman didn't have any overdraft fees, but she still wired the money to New York. Powers says she later realized the situation seemed like a scam and contacted the police department.

Powers adds that police officers would never demand to have money wired to anyone.
