Meteorologist Jeff Chapman of the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls says snow is expected through Wednesday afternoon.

"Snow in the Sioux Falls area will continue through the morning hours.  The snow will start to taper off by this afternoon. When all is said and done it looks like our total will be right around four inches."

Then, Chapman says sub zero temperatures will embrace the region.

"The big story once the snow moves out of the area will be the very cold conditions that will moving in.  Lows by Thursday night are going to be in the teens below zero for the areas around eastern South Dakota, Southwest Minnesota and Northwest Iowa. Wind chills on Thursday and Friday will be around 20 to 30 below.

As of 5:00 AM, Chapman says Sioux Falls has received up to one inch of snow.

Meanwhile, Rich Steffens of the Sioux Falls Street Department says his crews have been sanding the emergency routes in the city.

"They have light snow on them but we haven't heard if the residential streets are slick. We are out working right now on the emergency routes.  If we get more snow, our crews will be out there with blades too."
