Why Is The Flag At Half-Staff? Because It’s Peace Officers Memorial Day.

Hopefully you will notice that flags will be at half-staff on Thursday, May 15th.  President Barack Obama has proclaimed Thursday, May 15th, 2014, as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week of May 11th through May 17th, 2014, as Police Week.

Because of the President's proclamation, South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard is asking that flags be flown at half-staff on Peace Officers Memorial Day from 8 a.m. until sunset, Thursday, May 15th,  in honor of peace officers’ contributions and sacrifices.

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a peace officer is a civil officer (as a police officer) whose duty it is to preserve the public peace.  So if you know a police officer (peace officer) remember to thank them for all that they do to keep you and your family safe.
