If it's been awhile since you've cleaned the old bug zapper, you're in luck. October 16 is National Clean Your Bug Zapper Day.

It's the one day each year when you're suppose to take down the electric bug zapper and give it a good cleaning.

Having grown up on a farm, I know first hand how dirty those things can get. They can get downright disgusting!!!

It's one of those "out of sight, out of mind" things. You know it's dirty but you never take the time to give it a good scrubbing.

If you've never cleaned a bug zapper, your best bet is to take it down and spray it with a garden hose. Make sure you unplug it first though. That's VERY IMPORTANT!

And I'm speaking from experience. The first bug zapper I ever cleaned on the farm I forgot to unplug it and blew every fuse and tripped every breaker in the hog barn.

Made that mistake once and never again.

After first asking me if I was okay, my dad then proceeded to give me the lecture about the dangers of water and electricity.

So while you're cleaning your bug zapper today - let's be careful out there folks!
