When Does a Walk-off Single Not End a game? [VIDEO]

This week's minor league baseball game between the Lansing Lugnuts and the Great Lakes Loons featured a baseball rarity - a walk-off base hit that didn't end the game.

The Lugnuts, the Blue Jays Single-A affiliate, were hosting the Loons in a 4-4 game in the bottom of the ninth with outfielder Chris Hawkins at the plate with two outs and the bases loaded.

Hawkins becomes the hero with a base hit up the middle, scoring what should have been the winning run.

But wait.

In a celebration best described as 'premature', Hawkins is mobbed by his teammates as he nears first base.  Included in the mob, the runner on first, who never did head to second base.  See the problem here?

The Loons grab the ball, which is still live at that point,  throw it to second base, record a force, and after some consulting with the umpires, head to extra innings still tied at 4.

To add insult to injury, Great Lakes won the game 5-4 in 10.

Lugnuts indeed...
