Whatever Happened To Jeannie C. Riley?
‘I want to tell you all a story ’bout a Harper Valley widowed wife…’
The year was 1968 and all of us were introduced to that widow, the one who wore the mini-skirts. And I mean all of us were.
If you loved country music, you heard this song a lot because it was a #1 country best seller.
If you were more of a pop and rock music fan, well…you heard this song a lot because it was a #1 pop/rock best seller, too.
In fact, only a single week separated the song from being #1 on both charts at the same time.
The song was, of course, ‘Harper Valley PTA’ by Jeannie C. Riley. But did you know that the song was written by a Country Music Hall of Famer? Well, with a story like this song has, of course it had to be written by ‘The Story Teller’, Tom T. Hall.
The song won her a Grammy Award as well as the Country Music Association Single Of The Year.
And just how well did that single sell? Over five and a half million copies!
So what about after ‘Harper Valley PTA’?
Well, Jeannie had some success, charting a number of songs, but nothing even remotely approaching the phenomenal success of her signature song.
Jeannie became a Born Again Christian in the 1970′s and began recording Gospel music.
After the split from her husband, she suffered from Clinical Depression in the 1990′s and was actually bed ridden for several years. After family intervention and intense treatment, at the age of 67 Jeannie says she’s never been so happy and trust’s the Lord with everything.
