Whatever Happened To Dave Dudley?
Dave Dudley is Classic Country Music’s trucker.
Dave came out of the state of Wisconsin and was going to be a professional baseball player. An injury derailed that plan and to the good fortune of all of us who love classic country music, Dave turned to singing.
Dave first appeared on the country charts in 1961, but it was 1963 that was the year of Dave Dudley. Why? Because it was the year of ‘Six Days On The Road’.
That song sold over a million copies and earned Dave a Gold Record.
Dave had a number of other hit songs (many about his beloved truckers) but it’s ‘Six Days On The Road’ that remains the signature song, not only of Dave Dudley, but arguably of country music trucking songs in general.
By the way, here’s a trivia fact that could win you a free meal at your favorite truck stop.
Question: What was Dave Dudley’s only national #1 hit?
Answer: The Pool Shark in 1970.
That’s right, ‘Six Days On The Road’ was not a #1 hit! It peaked at #2 in 1963.
But no matter. ‘Six Days On The Road’ is Dave Dudley.
So whatever happened to Dave Dudley?
Dave passed away in 2003 at the age of 75 after suffering a heart attack at his home near Danbury, Wisconsin.
