Hi, my name is Jeff. Jeffrey if you want to get legal.

I was born in the early 1960's and my name is NOT very original. I'm not complaining, just stating a fact. I was made aware of just how average my name was when I played on a high school basketball team that had no fewer than six Jeff's on the roster!

So what's in a name exactly? Do you long to be different, or does fitting in suit you just fine?

Time.com is giving you a chance to go back through history and see what your name more than likely would have been if you were born in another time. It factors in how popular your name was the year you were born and matches it with the corresponding name from more than a dozen different decades.

For instance, Jeffrey was the tenth most popular name the year I was born. So with that in mind, here's how my birth certificate might have read had I been born in a different decade:

  • 1890's: Thomas
  • 1900's: Henry
  • 1910's: Albert
  • 1920's: Harold
  • 1930's: Edward
  • 1940's: Jerry
  • 1950's: Larry
  • 1960's: Charles
  • 1970's: Steven
  • 1980's: Eric
  • 1990's: John
  • 2000's: Zachary
  • Today: Daniel

A couple of interesting choices for me, especially since my Dad's name is Harold (my 1920's name) and if I ever had a son (I have two daughters), I wanted to name him Steven (my 1970's name).

All-in-all, I'll stick with Jeff, run-of-the-mill or not. You got it right Mom and Dad!
