That’s getting after it. Western Avenue’s anticipated three-day closure only takes a day and a half.

South Western Avenue between 26th and 22nd Streets is back open to traffic. The street was closed at 24th Street to provide access for utility work on the indoor aquatic center at Spellerberg Park.

As a result, a major traffic artery was fully restored. “Thank you to all of the drivers and area businesses for their patience the past couple days and also to the contractors for their quick work to get the street open in a timely fashion,” says Lance Weatherly, Civil Engineer.

Last week the closure was announced with the potential of the street being closed even into early Friday morning. The reason for the street’s shutdown was to install water and sewer services necessary to service the need of the Indoor Aquatic Center.

Weatherly says the contractor employed two crews simultaneously to this phase of construction. “The overall goal was to minimize the impact to traffic on Western Avenue.” Even though this segment went quickly, Weatherly doesn’t believe this will greatly impact the timetable for completion. The Indoor Aquatic Center should be complete by the fall of 2016.
