We Know It’s Tough But Take the 12th Street Detour to Take Out Trash

Just after Labor Day, continuing construction closed 41st Street going west at Ellis Road.  By doing so, a major route to the landfill west of Sioux Falls was closed.

People don’t like taking detours, which is understandable.  Plus there is more than one way to get to the landfill.  However, those unapproved trails are getting torn up by heavy vehicles lumbering through.  Now a reminder has been issued with regard to using a specific route for hauling waste.

Here is the recent release by the City of Sioux Falls:

Traffic to the Sioux Falls Regional Sanitary Landfill is being detoured to 12th Street due to the construction of West 41st Street. Landfill traffic should take 12th Street to SD Highway 17 to 267th Street. Detour signs are in place. This detour will remain in effect until approximately October 10.  “In consideration of our rural neighbors, we ask the public to use the marked detour routes established for landfill traffic and avoid gravel roads,” says Dave McElroy, Sanitary Landfill Superintendent. “When the construction of West 41st Street is complete, your way to the landfill will be smooth sailing, but we ask for your cooperation during this phase of construction.”

This stretch of gravel road (in the image below) along with others is being abused while 41st Street and Ellis Road is under repair.  Yes it’s an inconvenience, but 12th Street (Highway 42) is able to handle heavy loads and more traffic. The other roads are not.  By not following directions, the result becomes more construction and inconvenience.

Current landfill hours of operation are Monday through Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
