The first book series my parents ever purchased for me was the Little House on the Prairie collection. I used to love reading the stories about Laura (Half-Pint), Mary, Ma and Pa. I can even still sing ""Old Dan Tucker" - you know, the song Mr. Edwards always used to sing! I also remember being able to sit down and not only watch, but grow-up with, the Little House on the Prairie TV series, which was inspired by the books.

Fast forward to 2014, when the grittier, more adult book titled ‘Pioneer Girl: The Annotated Autobiography’ by the famous children’s author Laura Ingalls Wilder and published by the South Dakota State Historical Society hit the shelves, telling a story of what life on the prairie was really like in the 1800's. Of course I had to read it! Filled with stories of disease, domestic abuse and love gone wrong, it was obvious the latest Little House book was not for the kids.

So my interest was piqued when I found out that the South Dakota State Historical Society Press will again be releasing another book about Laura Ingalls Wilder, however the details of what the book is about won’t be released for a while yet. According to the Argus Leader, the new book will be "a scholarly work on the famed author who wrote the “Little House” series, the fictionalized account of Wilder’s life growing up as a pioneer on the American frontier, including Dakota Territory."

From that description, the story line of the new book could go in many different directions, but according to Nancy Tystad Koupal, the director of the South Dakota Historical Society Press, the new Laura Ingalls Wilder book will focus on "discovering the backstory" and the history of South Dakota.

Even though specific details of the new Laura Ingalls Wilder book haven't been released, I'm already adding it to my "Books I Have To Read" list. And if you are like me, and maybe want to take a trip down the Little House on the Prairie memory-lane,  the folks from LittleHouseOnThePrairie.com have a quiz you can take to find out what character you would be if you were on Little House on the Prairie. Have fun!
