Was Mike Zimmer a Good Hire for Minnesota?

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen and Adam Schefter reported on Wednesday morning that the Minnesota Vikings will hire Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer as their next head coach.

For the Vikings franchise, does the hiring of Zimmer work and fit their system?

Why Zimmer works?

Zimmer is a defensive coach, and the Vikings defense wasn’t very good last year. Minnesota gave up the second most yards last year (397.6), and the most total points (480) in the NFL in 2013.

In Cincinnati, Zimmer’s defense gave up 305 points and 305.5 yards per game (third in the NFL).

As a defensive-minded coach, Zimmer can focus on improving the defense and bring in an offensive coordinator that would call the plays. Candidates for the offensive coordinator position being mentioned are Scott Linehan, or Norv Turner.

Why Zimmer may not work?

The Vikings fired Leslie Frazier and he was a defensive coach. Yet, the defense still stunk. Zimmer will take over for Frazier, and will be asked to help improve the defense. However, that will not be his only job. He will have to manage a 53-man roster, and be in charge of making roster decisions on offense, defense and special teams.

Second, what does the hire of Zimmer do for quarterback development? The Vikings started Christian Ponder, Josh Freeman and Matt Cassel, and most likely will be looking to the draft in May for a quarterback. Zimmer should hire a offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach that can develop a quarterback whether it’s one of their three or if it’s through the draft. A quarterback can dictate a head coach’s job, and one could argue it did just that to Frazier’s job.

All in all, Minnesota is one year removed from the postseason and has the talent to make waves in the NFC. Zimmer’s job won’t be easy, but with a good staff, he may be able to turn the Vikings around sooner rather than later.

What do you think, was the hire of Zimmer a good or disappointing choice for head coach in Minnesota?
