USD to Work on Cultural Sensitivity After Incident

VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) — University of South Dakota officials say they plan to strengthen student conduct policies and do more work on cultural sensitivity after an incident during the school's homecoming parade.

Student Alexis Oskolkoff tells the Argus Leader she and her 10-year-old son were dressed in tribal regalia and were taunted by other students who made an inappropriate comment and gestures regarding their race.

Representatives from Strollers, the university's oldest student-run organization and the group responsible for the float from which the taunts came, apologized verbally and in writing to Oskolkoff and her son.

Dean of Students Kim Grieve says the incident is disappointing and troubling, and those apologies won't be the only resolutions to the incident. Grieve says she intends to use the incident as a teaching moment for the campus.
