INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.—South Dakota softball won its opener against IUPUI 4-0 but saw a late rally fall short in the second, losing 5-4. The loss was the Coyotes’ (20-11, 4-1 SL) first in conference play and snapped a five-game winning streak.

“It would have been nice to take two today, but once again we showed that we do not give up offensively,” said head coach Amy Klyse. “We played really well at times today, and tomorrow our focus will be to play our best for the entire game.”

Erica Denney (11-4) won the opener for the ‘Yotes, allowing one hit in seven scoreless innings and striking out eight.

Madison Frain (5-6) was given the loss in the second after allowing three earned runs on four walks and one hit in 2/3 of an inning of work. Missy Blackburn came on to allow two runs on five hits with three strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings of relief.

Katie Cochran was 3 for 6 on the day with two doubles and an RBI, while Yvon Minogue managed three hits, including a solo home run and a double, and Allie Daly had two hits, one home run and three RBIs. Daly now has eight homers this season, eighth-most in USD single-season history.

USD didn’t take long to score in the series opener, as a Minogue double followed by a Daly single led to a 1-0 lead. The ‘Yotes followed it up with another run in the third, this one coming on Minogue’s solo shot that increased their lead to 2-0.

South Dakota scored the final two runs of the first game in the top of the fourth. After Christine Broders reached on a walk Katie Cochran drove her home on a double to left field. The very next batter, Kate Snow, hit a double to right center field, scoring Cochran.

The Coyotes dug themselves an early hole in the second game, falling behind 4-0 in the first three innings, but looked to be headed to another comeback with after a three run fourth inning. Minogue opened the stanza with a walk and Daly followed by launching a home run to center field. Three batters later Matley Jones hit her third home run of the year to cut the Jags’ lead to 4-3.

After the Jaguars widened their lead to 5-3 with a home run in the fifth, the ‘Yotes entered the top of the seventh looking to rally for a comeback. With one outs and the bases empty Lindsey Boyd hit a double down the left field line. One out later an IUPUI error allowed Katie Dinning to reach first and Boyd to advance to third. A wild pitch then scored Boyd and advanced Dinning to third, shrinking the USD deficit to 5-4, but IUPUI pitcher Jocelyn Oppenhuis was able to retire the final ‘Yote to preserve her team’s victory.

The series will conclude with a rubber match at 11 a.m. CST Saturday.
