SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — The four candidates for an open U.S. Senate seat in South Dakota all want to reshape the country's education policy, but in different ways.

Republican Mike Rounds, Democrat Rick Weiland, and independents Gordon Howie and Larry Pressler are vying for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by retiring Tim Johnson. The election is Nov. 4.

Rounds tells the Argus Leader that he wants to repeal the federal Education Department. He says local school boards are capable of making most decisions on how to educate children.

Howie says he would focus on fighting the Common Core education standards.

Pressler says he would push for increased spending on higher education, and lower interest rates for student loans.

Weiland says he would like to see expanded access to preschool.
