Tri-Valley School Approves Policy for Arming Employees
COLTON, S.D. (AP) — The Tri-Valley School Board has given final approval for certain school employees to carry guns.
State legislators passed a school sentinel law in March 2013, a few months after the deadly Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut. Tri-Valley is the first South Dakota school to approve a school sentinel policy.
School administrators aren't disclosing which employees will be designated as sentinels. Superintendent Mike Lodmel says it likely will be a "handful" of employees who will volunteer and undergo training.
State law requires the training. Tri-Valley's policy also calls for a psychological evaluation for sentinels.
Reaction remains mixed among parents, with some in favor and others worried that it might create a false sense of security or lead to problems if someone accidentally gets ahold of a gun in school.
