SPRINGFIELD, S.D. (AP) — The town of Springfield later this month will dedicate a veterans memorial that has been five years in the making.

The monument is a 22-foot-tall gray granite spire, with black granite panels etched with the names of nearly 2,000 veterans. A light at the top will be visible from miles away.

The Yankton Daily Press & Dakotan reports that an Oct. 25 dedication ceremony is set in the community's Terrace Park.

A planning committee formed in the fall of 2010, and efforts to raise $160,000 began on Memorial Day the following year. Ground-breaking was held at this year's Memorial Day program.

Officials are still trying to raise the last $10,000. A pancake breakfast is scheduled Nov. 8 in the town's community center.
