A bus that was part of Toby Keith‘s touring convoy caught on fire on a highway near Indianapolis, Ind. in the early hours of the morning on Monday (July 1).

While a bus blaze is always frightening, the good news is that the ‘Red Solo Cup’ singer was not on board when the fire broke out, and no one in his crew was injured. The bus was said to be carrying band members.

The tour bus in question was one of three that were traveling together after the singer’s Sunday night (June 30) gig in Chicago. It was headed to Nashville.

The fire started at approximately 4:45AM on Monday on Interstate 65. Heavy fire was seen coming from the back engine of the 1998 Prevost.

Driver Randy James noticed flames shooting from the rear upon looking in the driver’s side rearview mirror. The vehicle then lost power and he coasted to the side of the road. Firefighters had the blaze under control in about 25 minutes.

Local authorities had to close the southbound lanes of the highway, about 15 miles northwest of Indianapolis, for several hours in order to clean up debris. The back of the tour bus was charred and the cause of the fire is not yet known, but investigators are working together to find out what happened and why.

Total damage is estimated to be around $250,000, but that figure will take shape and become more firm once things are fully investigated. Some of the items on the bus were salvaged.

Keith’s next show is the Oklahoma Twister Relief Concert, which he organized in response to the tornado that swept through his home state on May 20. The show is scheduled for Saturday (July 6) in Norman, Okla.
