It was known as 'The Cold War'.

The United States of America stood on one side.  The Soviet Union stood on the other.

World War II had ended and these two allies were now....well, if not enemies...very uneasy and suspicious members of the planet earth.

Both had nuclear weapons, but needed more.  And more.  And more.  There was no such thing as 'too many'.  One could totally destroy the other fifty times over...a hundred times over...but both needed more.  Why?

Well....just in case.

And if that nuclear exchange occurred it would take the rest of the world with it.

So then, how to survive?

Well, if you were growing up in the 1950's and early 1960's, there was only one way: Duck and Cover.

Oh, I can't really explain it, but I know someone who can show you.  His name is Bert the Turtle and this was shown in school houses all across America 'back in the day'.
