Three Year Old Girl with Cancer Displays Best Attitude Ever

Ever have a three-year-old come up to you and say, “I’m Amelia and I beat cancer,” as if it were better than going to Disney World?  If only you knew how tough it was to actually reach the status of “beating” cancer.

That was one of the experiences during a swimming pool party that included both cancer survivors and the recently diagnosed.  The Sanford Children’s Specialty Clinic and Child Life Specialists shepherd little ones from under a year old to those in their teens through the journey of medications and hospitalizations.

For a few hours everyone gets to be a family with that common bond not of blood, but of an affliction.  One of my sons was diagnosed with leukemia in 2009 and finished treatment over a year ago.  The events and mileposts still fresh in the memory bank.  While the children played in the pool at the Sioux Falls Ramkota, parents can exchange stories of the food cravings and close calls.

It’s an exclusive group, but seems to grow larger every year with more children diagnosed with different types of cancer.  All the more reason to consider the Cure Kids Cancer Radiothon Fund Drive that’s coming in March.  Those that are still fighting need your help and sorry to say, there will be more.  Ready yourself for the challenge because donating to fight cancer so kids don’t have to is easier than actually going through it.
