The Future of Snow Gates in Sioux Falls
During the 2013‒2014 winter season, the City of Sioux Falls is using six snow gates during snow events. These snow gates will not be used in consistent, selective areas as in years past but will be used in different neighborhoods for each snow event.
Multiple operators will be trained to use the snow gates, which will provide the City the flexibility to use them in any neighborhood in Sioux Falls.
During the past three winters, about 20 percent of the City’s streets were
tested with snow gates. While the average snowfall was less during these
three years than the typical Sioux Falls winter, testing gathered a great deal
We learned a lot during these years of testing. Snow gates are effective at reducing snow in driveways and intersections. They are most effective if we receive less than
6 inches of snowfall and when the snow contains less moisture.” – Galynn Huber,
Street and Fleet Operations Manager.
The use of snow gates citywide will be decided by the citizens when they vote on
the issue on April 8, 2014. The City has proactively budgeted for the costs to purchase
additional snow gates in 2014 in the event of a favorable vote.
