The Eagles teamed with legendary singer-songwriter Jackson Browne on Monday night (Feb. 15) for a very special tribute to Glenn Frey at the 2016 Grammy Awards.

Frey passed away in January at the age of 67 from complications from rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis and pneumonia. His Eagles bandmates Don Henley, Bernie Leadon, guitarist Joe Walsh and bassist Timothy B. Schmit joined with Browne for a musical tribute to Frey by performing "Take It Easy."

Browne took Frey's place at center stage and sang lead on the song, which he and Frey co-wrote in their early, struggling days, when they were living in the same apartment complex. The song reached No. 12 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 after the Eagles released it as their debut single in 1972, and was featured in the band's set from then until they wrapped their final tour in 2015.

The band contributed their usual flawless harmonies and instrumentation, with the Grammys crowd participating in a singalong at the end before bursting into applause at the fun, classic performance, rewarding Frey's legacy with a standing ovation as the musicians took a collective bow.

Henley recalled his long relationship with Frey in a post to Facebook, saying Frey was “more like a brother to me.”

“Glenn was the one who started it all,” he states. “He was the spark plug, the man with the plan. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of popular music and a work ethic that wouldn’t quit. He was funny, bullheaded, mercurial, generous, deeply talented and driven. He loved his wife and kids more than anything. We are all in a state of shock, disbelief and profound sorrow."
