A police officer was trying to stop a teenager whose car had a brake light out Thursday night in the Hilltop area of eastern Sioux Falls.

But police say the teen sped away and rolled his car in a residential area a few blocks away.

Officer Sam Clemens says it was shortly before 11pm when the officer attempted to make the stop at 13th and Cleveland, and he says the driver stopped, but then drove away.

The pursuit went east from Cleveland until the driver lost control, hit a tree at 13th and Holt and rolled the car.

The driver ran, but officers followed footprints and located him behind a house at 15th and Cloudas Avenue.

Clemens says marijuana, methamphetamine and a handgun were found in his car.

The 17-year-old driver, who was alone in the vehicle, was taken to the Juvenile Detention Center for possession of marijuana and paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a concealed weapon without a permit, reckless driving and possession of a handgun by a minor.

Damage to his 2010 Toyota Venza was estimated at $10,000.
