Teen Arraigned on Attempted Murder Charge in School Shooting

CANTON, S.D. (AP) — A judge has entered a not guilty plea on behalf of a student charged with attempted murder in the shooting of a South Dakota high school principal.

Sixteen-year-old Mason Buhl is charged as an adult on one count each of attempted murder and the commission of a felony while armed with a firearm. He was formally arraigned on those charges Monday in Canton.

Buhl is accused of confronting Harrisburg High School Principal Kevin Lein with a handgun in his office on the morning of Sept. 30 and firing a single shot with a handgun. Lein was lightly wounded in the arm.

Defense attorney Mike Butler declined to speak to reporters after the brief hearing.

Each charge carries a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison.
