SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Lawyers for a deaf woman charged in the 2011 slaying of a homeless man in Sioux Falls want to suppress interviews they say were illegally obtained.

Sadie Red Bear is charged with manslaughter and aggravated assault in the death of 58-year-old Daniel Eastman, who was beaten and stabbed in a downtown alley in August 2011. He died in hospice three months later.

Red Bear wasn't charged until this year, but she was identified as a person of interest early in the investigation and interviewed by police the day after the stabbing.

The Argus Leader reports her lawyers maintain she was drunk for the first interview, and that during a second interview she did not have an interpreter. The defense maintains that violated her rights. A judge will rule later.
