The federal Interior Department says a suspect is in custody in the stabbing of the Bureau of Indian Affairs superintendent on the Crow Creek Indian Reservation.

Interior spokeswoman Nedra Darling says in a statement that BIA police are continuing to investigate the incident.

Former tribal chairman Brandon Sazue said Superintendent Patrick F. Duffy was attacked Wednesday at BIA headquarters in Fort Thompson, South Dakota. Duffy was taken to a hospital in Sioux Falls.

His cousin, Patrick K. Duffy, says that the superintendent is conscious, though he doesn't know the extent of his injuries.

Sazue said that as superintendent, Duffy oversees BIA facilities in Fort Thompson and manages tribal land.
